“I Am So Proud of Myself!”

My name is Martine Williams and I am from the Gainestown community near Jackson, Alabama. I was enrolled in the HIPPY program by Mrs. Jane Sellers in 2007 with my 3 year old son, LaKenny Williams. He is now 8 years old. Then in 2008, I enrolled with my youngest son when he was 3 years old. His name is Tyrese Washington and he is now 7 years old.
In 2010, I was offered the opportunity to be a Parent Educator. However, I did not have a high school diploma. I was told that I could be hired as a “Parent Educator in Training” if I would go to school and get my GED. So I agreed to go. I went for seven months and I went to take the test in April. A week later, I received a call to come to the school. So I went and found out that I had passed the test. I was so happy!
I know if I had not been offered this job, I wouldn’t have thought about getting my GED. So I would like to say, “Thank you” to HIPPY Clarke County, the coordinator of the program, Mrs. Jane and the teacher at Alabama Southern Community College, Stuart Lee. I am so proud of myself!
